PURPOSE AND VISION

A place where culture is shared & celebrated and where practical support is available to all Aboriginal women, particularly those who are currently experiencing family violence or have in the past.

Djirra – sharing stories, finding solutions

We stand firm with Aboriginal women against family violence and deliver campaigns to make sure Aboriginal women’s voices are heard, victim blaming can be stopped and perpetrators can be held accountable.

We are committed to maintaining support throughout the changing condition of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Your safety and the safety of our staff is our top priority.

Djirra is a Woiwurrung word for the reed used by Wurundjeri women for basket weaving. Traditionally, when women gathered to weave, important talks took place and problems were solved.  Djirra symbolises Aboriginal women today, still  coming together to share stories, support each other and find solutions.

Koori Women’s Place (KWP) Open 9am-5pm.  A unique cultural program based in Abbotsford. We offer a safe space for women to gather, participate in activities, share stories, or sometimes, just have brief respite from the immediate and pressing impacts of family violence.

Join in online cultural, wellbeing social activities;

  • Have a yarn, unwind and take a break;
  • Get personalised support from our Senior Support Workers;
  • Connect with Djirra lawyers;
  • Be connected with a service provider partnering with the KWP to get information or talk about issues (e.g. Centrelink, Births, Deaths and Marriages, Consumer Action Law Centre etc.).

Our Aboriginal Family Violence Legal Service is dedicated to supporting Aboriginal people who are experiencing or have experienced family violence (women and men). We also assist non-Aboriginal people experiencing family violence who are parents of Aboriginal children.  We help by providing one-off legal advice as well as opening ongoing cases. We work in the following areas of law:

  • Intervention Orders
  • Family Law
  • Child Protection
  • Victims of Crime Compensation.

We may also help with other legal issues connected to a family violence situation such as complaints about Police, assistance with Centrelink or the Child Support Agency, and problems with the Office of Housing about damage to your house.

We do not provide support to perpetrators of family violence or sexual assault. We can refer perpetrators to support services to assist them.

For more information about the areas of law we can assist with, check our factsheets.

Our Individual Support Service (ISS) aims to empower Aboriginal women and their children to build strong, safe independent and positive lives free from family violence.  We can help you to heal from family violence

  • by listening and yarning about your experiences
  • by providing information about how to get safe and help your children be safe, including referrals to other services
  • by providing support with housing, health, finances and employment issues that will help keep you and your family safe in future
  • through specialised supports such as counselling and assistance with drug and alcohol issues
  • by understanding of your family and community ties and how these are essential to your healing and wellbeing

Read our brochure if you want to know more about our support services and your rights at Djirra.
